Doing Service and Giving Thanks with City Year Boston: Updated with More Pictures!

On Friday, November 19th, City Year Boston was honored to be able to lead another annual Thanksgiving Day service project, where we had the opportunity to engage corporate sponsors and get out into the city of Boston to perform service at multiple sites. We would like to take this space to sincerely thank some of our service partners that came to City Year headquarters to give a day of service, including: Harvard GivesWestfield Capital ManagementBain Capital, Bain & CompanyNational Grid, Johnson & Johnson and Harvard Pilgrim!

Please, enjoy some pictures from the day of service in the Levine Civic Forum, and click here for a wonderful recap of the day, written by our very own Katie Venetsky!

  1. Hey thanks a lot Care Force! I appreciate the cross-site love!

  2. We had a successful day of service at the East End House, a community center in Cambridge. The East End House offers child care, emergency food support, elementary and middle school extended day programming, and support for families and seniors. With such an array of services, Corps Members performed many different tasks. Some assisted in the center’s garden, others organized books and the pantry, while still others made decorations and sorted cans for the East End House’s Thanksgiving event. I sat in a preschool room with a dozen toddlers as we sang songs, had snack, and read stories. It was great to partner with an organization that is similarly invested in our community and to provide a hand in making Thanksgiving a time of celebration for everyone.

    Hey Elliot and CYB,

Last Tuesday the 23rd me and six other CYB corps members did our Thanksgiving Day service project at the Eliot School of Fine and Applied Arts in Jamaica Plain. The Eliot school was established back in 1676 where, originally, readings of the Bible were taught to children. Today, it provides applied art classes for adults and children of the community. Us six corps members spent our day clearing the Eliot school’s surrounding land, filling up some 60 bags full of leaves! It was quite interesting for me to be able to visit and serve at such an ancient institution!

  4. On Friday last week, after getting lost in an attempt to find our service site in Jamaica Plain, a group of 7 other City Year Corps Members and I walked through the Arnold Arboretum to finally reach the Italian Home for Children. There we not only raked thousands of leaves, but we had the joyous opportunity to jump into a leave-filled dumpster in order to more efficiently store the leaves. We helped keep the home and school area as crisp and clean as their mission to serve children in the community. Another group simultaneously worked on organizing closets, sorting through clothes, and assisting in the creation of art crafts for the art teacher. Thanks, City Year, for enabling hundreds of volunteers to make a difference in communities across Boston!
